Like many small business owners, Norman Campbell didn’t initially set out to do what he finds himself doing. While attending college to become an addictions counsellor, an infestation of bedbugs piqued his interest in becoming a pesticide applicator, and his career journey started on a different path. More than 25 years later, Norman is the owner of BUG-E Exterminator and has become the local expert on pest and weed control for residential, business, and industrial applications. Centred in Lac La Biche, his services are often requested throughout northern Alberta. While this type of work may not be of interest to everyone, Campbell’s passion for his business has led him to become an expert in pest and weed control in multiple specialties, including aquatic vegetation control, tree and landscape maintenance, industrial site weed control, and structural damage due to infestation. Each area of specialization requires training, licensing, and regular certification every five years.Advertisements Campbell is non-judgmental to those who have pest infestation problems. “It can happen to anyone,” he says. “If you have a problem or even think you might have a problem, visit the website at bug-eexterminator.ca or call 780-404-6436.” Norman is always happy to discuss your situation and provide a […]
Local teacher and artist Ruth Fyten began painting dogs, horses, and cats for pleasure and soon found her work being requested for local charity auctions. With assistance from her daughter Molly, Ruth’s hobby and side gig has blossomed into a viable business servicing the Lac La Biche region and beyond. Ruth (right) and her daughter, Molly Her watercolour pet portraits start from photos sent to her by clients. She prefers several images to work from to capture the animal’s true essence and “personality.” Advertisements Ruth typically has a couple of portraits on the go all the time, charging a flat rate per animal based on the finished size of the painting. For example, an 11’ x 14” portrait of a single animal would cost about $120.00. Tanisha Happner, the owner of The Mill Bakery, has business in her blood, with her parents being the long-time owners of Lac La Biche’s The Stitchin’ Man. And while she was immersed in a business culture very early in life, she also spent a good deal of time with her grandmother, learning and honing her baking skills. Tanisha’s passion for baking and her grandmother’s influence led her to Calgary to study Baking and Pastry Arts at SAIT. This 2-year program offers students the opportunity to learn from a variety of world-class chefs. Advertisements After completing the program, she worked in Plamondon at Café Caché for six months before going back to school to study event management at NAIT. With all this training, Tanisha’s father asked if she had any plans for starting a business and suggested that she start a food truck. And with that, in nine short months, The Mill Bakery food truck was on the road by the spring of 2018, with a home base next door to the Stitchin’ Man. It didn’t take long for The Mill Bakery to be a success. As a long-time resident of Lac La Biche, she quickly developed a loyal client base, offering […]
Chelsey Supernault didn’t have the idea of starting a business when she watched a TikTok video demonstrating a macrame project. It was more about stirring up some beloved memories of her youth and spending time with her mother, who enjoyed the craft many years ago. The experience inspired her to pick up the hobby again; and before she knew it, she had completed her first project. In November 2021, with encouragement and technical expertise from her daughters, Chelsey was reluctantly convinced to take photos of her work, post them on Facebook and Instagram, and Rustic Sparkle Designs was born. Orders started to come in right away, and from her dining room table, Chelsey made enough money in those first few weeks to do all her Christmas shopping.Advertisements Chelsey Supernault When things slowed down in January, Supernault spent time on research and development, like working on different types of knots and experimenting with different kinds of cords from a variety of distributors. Soon she had enough work completed to set up a booth at the Indigenous Peoples Day market, that happened this past spring. Chelsey emphasizes that she takes the time to consider the client’s personality and individual needs before designing each creation. And […]
Rush Hour? The only rush hour in Lac La Biche is when the school day begins and ends. You see young people. Maybe there are even a few in your house. Gasp! How could we forget about them? There Is A Chicken and Egg Situation With Our Youth There ARE many youth-run businesses silently doing well in our area- actual brick-and-mortar businesses. A silent economy, if you will. There are also many successful youth earning good wages, employ others, and add to our economy. We should celebrate these examples whenever we have a chance.Advertisements Woman using industrial machine Many opportunities for youth are becoming available due to the mass exit of the baby boomers from the workforce. As life slowly creeps along, we should consider how many skilled employees will be needed locally to replace all those higher-paying positions. The Chicken: The chicken is encouraging our youth to stay in the Lac La Biche region to fill those positions and start new enterprises if they are so inclined. There are many strong footholds in our community to establish promising futures. Contrary to popular belief, migration from urban to rural areas is trending. The Egg: This egg will die if […]
Family has always been key to the success of Marczak’s hardware store in Lac La Biche. When Joe and Amelia Leibel purchased Lac La Biche’s Mcleods Hardware franchise in 1960, little did they know that they would set the framework for a family business that would still be in place for more than 60 years. In 1972, Leibel’s daughter and son-in-law, Bruno and Helen Marczak, took over the business, and an eight-year-old Tony and his three sisters started working at the store doing odd jobs wherever and whenever they could. In 1995, Tony and his wife Kathy purchased the business from their parents, and this year, their daughters, Naomi and Kaitlin have assumed ownership of the store.Advertisements (L-R back row) Tony, Bruno, Naomi, Kaitlin, Michael, Kathy(L-R front row) Hazel, Charlee While the store has been in its current location for more than 50 years, it has undergone multiple name changes. Mcleods Hardware evolved to True Value in 1992, then Tru Hardware in 2010. Since 2015 the store, is known as Marczak’s Ace Hardware and is currently affiliated with PeavyMart Industries. Tony Marczak has seen many changes over the years, from the types of products consumers want to the kinds of […]
By now, most folks in the area have seen a new sign on Main Street that boldly reads Lac La Biche Pharmacy. With healthcare services at a premium in rural areas, this type of service is a welcome sight. Owner-pharmacist Mayur Patel, along with his business partner and wife Mishti Hirani, opened the business just a couple of short weeks ago on July 30th. A Focus On Healthcare The store focuses on health care products only, rather than the department store vibe that is common in many drugstore chain operations. While all of this might seem simple enough, Patel’s journey to this point in his career and to Lac La Biche itself was much more complicated.Advertisements A Long And Winding Road Originally from Mumbai, India, Patel studied pharmacy in that country, completing his master’s and Ph.D., specializing in drug development research and supervising students. He applied to immigrate to Canada in 2010 and arrived in Ontario in 2012, working for the Loblaws chain while he passed the necessary qualifications to practice pharmacy in this country. Once that hurdle was completed, Patel’s journey led him to BC with Shoppers Drug Mart, back to Ontario, and then to Alberta, where he eventually […]
There are new business owners in town. Jamie and Ryan Beilstein purchased Lac La Biche Stationers this past April. And while they didn’t have plans to own a business when they began their journey to Lac La Biche over six years ago, sometimes a great opportunity determines how things turn out. Jamie and Ryan Beilstein & family, owners of Lac La Biche Stationers Opportunity Strikes Ryan, originally from Texas, was awaiting his Canadian citizenship before looking for employment. When he could apply for work, he accepted a job at Lac La Biche Stationers as a computer technician. Jamie, who comes from Innisfail, found work as an educational assistant. They were pretty sure that they would only be in the area for two years, but like many first-timers in the region, they soon fell in love with it. Advertisements When the former owner of LLB Stationers suggested that the couple might consider buying the business, it didn’t take long for them to make a leap of faith in both the business and the community. “Lac La Biche is much more than we expected,” says Jamie. It is a fantastic community where we can establish our roots and contribute in a deep and meaningful […]

Colin Côté is not your regular hot tub and pool service agent. Fortunately for the hundreds of spa and pool owners in the region, Colin has the experience and qualifications, including power engineering, several trade certifications, and industry training to repair and maintain all aspects of your pool or spa. As the owner of Lac La Biche’s Certified Pool & Spa Service, he has seen pretty much every possible maintenance issue and repair situation. Certified Pool & Spa Service Colin Côté, owner of Certified Pool & Spa Service and Certified Services A Passion For Service Colin was a successful spa dealer in the Calgary area, with several locations. When he sold his business and returned to Lac La Biche more than 12 years ago, he decided to focus on the maintenance and repair side of the industry rather than sales. Given that hot tubs are comprised of high voltage components, hot water, and multiple chemicals when something goes wrong, it isn’t always something that a spa owner can typically repair on their own. This is where Colin’s Certified Pool & Spa makes a big difference to the region.Advertisements Hot tubs are used for both recreation and therapy. Some owners use […]

June 18, 2022, will be a busy day for Lac La Biche County with Lemonade Day. This event is a free and fun youth entrepreneurship program that teaches youth, Pre-K to high school, how to start, own and operate their own business. All participants will set up their lemonade stands in their towns at the location of their choice and try their hand at running their own business. The youth that participates in Lemonade Day keep all the profit their stand makes, but the program encourages them to save some, spend some and share some by donating to a charity of their choice. Advertisements Teaching Young Entrepreneurs One of the unique aspects of Lemonade Day is that youth are encouraged to partner with local businesses in their town and “rent” space for their lemonade stands outside of that business. Even though the “rent” is typically only $1, it helps to teach these young entrepreneurs about business expenses. This partnership allows participating youth to access higher traffic areas where they will be able to attract plenty of customers to their business. Tracy Lord has packed several careers into a relatively short timeframe. Born and raised in Plamondon, as a 21-year-old, she opened the Rendez-Vous Bakery in her home community, employing 14 people by the time it was sold. In 1996, Tracy moved on from the hospitality industry to start a new career with Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries, spending more than 15 years in the finance and corporate affairs departments. While she enjoyed her time with ALPAC, she was anxious to spend more time with her young family. With that in mind, and with a precedent set by her parents, she invested in local properties to rent or fix up and sell as a new source of income. Today, while Tracy is still involved in her real estate investments, she has also found success as a real estate agent for Seller Direct Northern Homes Realty, based out of Fort McMurray. Focused on the Lac La Biche region, Tracy’s reach extends to Boyle, Grassland, and Athabasca, depending on the needs of her clients. While the economic downturn and Covid-19 may have hampered many businesses in the region, the real estate business was not one of them. Locally, the market has remained strong, with more […]
For many small business owners in rural Alberta, the idea of hosting a website or creating a social media presence can be a bit intimidating. Because of this, a good percentage of these businesses choose to do without a digital media presence, putting themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to connecting with customers locally and beyond. Recently, a new government program was created to reduce the digital divide between businesses that are online and those that are not. Through the Digital Economy Program and the Digital Mainstreet initiative, Digital Service Squads (DDS) were established to provide 1-on-1 FREE local assistance to small businesses in any region of the province.Advertisements Helping Get Small Businesses Online The DDS program is offered through a partnership between Business Link and Digital Main Street with support from local Community Futures offices, helping small businesses in Alberta undergo digital transformations and adopt eCommerce practices. DSS is open to home-based or commercial small businesses registered in Alberta with less than 50 employees. Small businesses can apply to participate in the program free of charge. Services include training and advisory support towards digital strategy development, Google My Business assistance, social media posts, assistance with websites, creating videos, photography, and more. Lisa Roper’s journey to becoming an outdoors enthusiast isn’t unique. She was inspired by her father, who taught her how to enjoy and benefit from the Lac La Biche region’s spectacular natural environment. What is unique about Lisa Roper is the uncanny passion that pushes her to share her skills with anyone who takes an interest. A Giant Natural Playground Lisa was born in Lac La Biche, and at an early age, she was fortunate enough to experience the boreal forest and countless lakes in the area. “It was a giant playground,” says Roper, reflecting on her youth. Her favourite times were spent with her brothers, camping, fishing, hunting, and guided by her father, learning the values and life lessons that only the great outdoors can offer.Advertisements “It was a giant playground.” When her dad passed away seven years ago, Lisa struggled to make sense of it. In 2018, her vision became clear. She would share his values and passion for the outdoors by paying it forward and teaching others how to appreciate it as much as she does. And that was the beginning of Lisa Roper Outdoors. Mentorship And Learning In A Safe Environment Lisa Roper Outdoors has become […]
If you haven’t heard about the Road to Hope Community Support Foundation, it’s time you did. Established in 2008, Road to Hope is a non-profit that provides no-charge transportation to Edmonton for those in the Lac La Biche or Athabasca region who require cancer medical treatment. Jessica Wallace, the foundation coordinator, says that they have a very active group of volunteer drivers with a few on the waiting list. Since the lifting of covid-19 restrictions, the organization has averaged about seven trips to the city each month, with numbers expected to increase as things get back to normal, with 20 clients typically using the service regularly.Advertisements ALPAC established the Road to Hope, and they continue to support the project as a signature charity. Another key supporter is the Kinsmen Club of Athabasca, which has purchased a van dedicated to the project. Signature Events Scheduled For 2022 Anyone can contribute to Road to Hope by making a tax-deductible contribution, volunteering, or both. Each year, volunteers help organize two signature events – a 6km fun run in Sir Winston Churchill Park that will take place this year on May 28 and a golf tournament in Athabasca in September. While local business was significantly affected by the covid-19 pandemic, it also made a huge impact on our kids and their education. With children forced to stay inside, play video games, and watch too much television, a group of parents, Home Grown Learners from the Plamondon area, decided to take matters into their own hands to get youth more engaged in their education, and ultimately their career choice. This was the inspiration for Adventure Shop. Adventure Shop Opens Door To Possibilities Adventure Shop is organized by parent volunteers and provides field trips for more than 100 kids from five to twelve years of age to various places of work in the Lac La Biche area. From logging operations to airplane hangars, youth are exposed to a wide range of workplace environments.Advertisements Ivan Sofin, a coordinator with the group, emphasized the importance of exposing children to various workplaces and career opportunities. “Real-life experiences for our kids are an important part of their education,” says Sofin. “Getting them away screen-time and into the real world opens their eyes to hundreds of possibilities right here at home.” Each field trip is followed by a homework project that includes writing about what they liked […]
When Shawn Twigge retired from a career in the oil and gas sector, he knew in his heart that he still needed something to do. He also knew that to enjoy this next stage of his life, whatever he did, he must be passionate about it. Shawn Twigge, owner of Twig’s Appliance Repair Taking The Time To Do It Right As a person who always liked to work on small engines, quads, or whatever, he was quick to lean on these skills when thinking about starting a business. Often called upon to repair appliances for family or friends, it didn’t take a lot of market research to know that this type of service was needed in the Lac La Biche region. Twigs Appliance Repair was born after a couple of years to set things up, including taking the appropriate courses and attaining the necessary credentials online. Advertisements While starting a new business is always a bit stressful, after nine short months of operation, Shawn is proud to say he has completed more than 350 jobs and is never short of work. “Office work and ordering parts take about three hours each day,” says Twigge, “with another six to eight hours […]
Have you ever considered the impact volunteers make in our community? Think about events like the Festival of Trees or Pow Wow Days. Think about those giving their time to those in need, helping seniors, assisting at hospitals, participating on various boards, or coaching our kids. The list is endless. Without volunteers, Lac La Biche would not be an attractive place for visitors, new businesses, or those looking for a community to raise their families. And if we were required to pay for services that volunteers provide for free, our taxes would simply skyrocket. A Special Award For Exemplary Service Freda Phillipsrecognized for exemplary community service Volunteer and community organizer Freda Phillips was recently presented with the Wanda Klimke Award for Distinguished Long-term Service with Farmers Markets by Alberta Agriculture Minister Nate Horner. Freda and her friend Kathy Lawson started the LLB Farmers Market in 1973 and she retired after managing the market after 35 years of service. While this milestone is significant, it is only part of Freda’s thousands of hours dedicated to various causes and projects in the Lac La Biche region. Lorin Tkachuk was born and raised in LLB. After more than a decade of working with TwinTel Communications and Telus, he took the leap to start his own business in 2019. That was the start of TH Systems. TH Systems provides products and services for home and business automation and security. While this could sound a bit daunting to the average person, Lorin points out that his company provides a wide range of services to match everyone’s needs. Advertisements Security And Automation Systems Are Becoming Commonplace From widow roll-shutters and 24/7 monitoring services to integrated wireless speakers for your home entertainment system, Tkachuk points out that home automation and security services are becoming more commonplace in the Lac La Biche region. “One size does not fit all, says Tkachuk, “different customers, big and small, have different needs.” He points to the nearby First Nation communities and Métis settlements that have been previously under-served by security solutions as a growing market. Keeping Customers Involved In The Design Process Customers are included in the security or automation system design from the ground up to ensure their needs and budget are met. Another key ingredient in the success of TH Systems is the fact […]
by Diana Noble | At the end of each year, as many people do, I develop a list of ways to improve my life in the year ahead. Some people call these “New Year’s Resolutions,” but I prefer to think of them as strategic goals. I’ve learned over the years not to set myself up for failure by setting unrealistic expectations and instead only focusing on tangible results that align with my deeper self. That wasn’t always the case, though.Advertisements Taking on too much is a recipe for failure A few years ago, while perusing through memories in the form of cards, photos and letters, I came across a list of New Year’s Resolutions I had written on the back of an envelope in 2007. I’ve always been someone who seeks to improve my situation, but in my early 20s, I lacked the wherewithal to set myself up for success that I’ve learned since then. Instead of choosing just one thing to focus on, I had an extensive list that included drinking a glass of milk every day, taking vitamins, paying off debt, saving money, doing 20 sit-ups per day, and the list went on and on. I’ll give you […]

Optimism is a way of thinking and seeing things; it frames your perspective. Optimists believe they have the skill and ability to make good things happen, and they are more confident. Optimism helps people succeed It isn’t just a forward-thinking process that makes a positive outlook. It is also a way of explaining what has already happened. One of the most significant causes of anxiety is reliving past troublesome events or hardships, seeing setbacks as a personal fault, and assigning blame- often to themselves. Instead, optimists don’t blame themselves and view setbacks as temporary. They see their abilities as a stable extension of themselves. They link any setback to a specific situation or event, not their capabilities.Advertisements Optimism makes us stronger What are your goals? Is anything stopping you besides you? Is any pessimism healthy? If we ask ourselves, “what went wrong?” It helps us zero in on the real problem if we don’t blame ourselves and everything else, including the kitchen sink. If we ask ourselves realistically, “what could go wrong?” We can prevent problems or keep ourselves or our loved ones safe. If our perspective is that setbacks are temporary and our abilities are permanent, it helps us […]
While electric vehicles or EVs are gaining some traction in larger cities (pun intended), the uptake in rural areas has been limited at best. Besides underlying philosophical and political leanings towards oil and gas-driven engines, many of us who live in northern Alberta have practical issues to consider as well, including cold-weather reliability and distances travelled, not to mention the availability of charging stations. Surveys have shown that less than 10% of Canadians considering purchasing a new vehicle are considering an electric vehicle. Among rural drivers, this percentage is certain to be dramatically smaller. Another survey by Deloitte (Globe and Mail, Jan 25, 2022) indicated that most Canadians would feel more comfortable with EV’s that had a minimal driving range of 600 kilometres, compared to the standard 300 to 500 kilometres that most affordable EVs offer right now. Advertisements High Gears Touchless Wash at 9806-99 Ave While EV charging stations are limited in northern Alberta, most communities have at least one charging station option. In La La Biche, High Gears Touchless Wash at 9806-99 Ave has a charging station available to the public advertised as “free with $16 carwash. Check with High Gears for more details.
Conversations Lead to Successful Side-Gig Starting a new business is not always the result of a great deal of planning. Sometimes, everything just seems to fall into place. For Kayla Tkachuk, this was indeed the case. While on maternity leave from her job, she attended a brunch with a few friends. The conversation led to an invitation to participate in a Ribbon Skirt workshop at the Native Friendship Centre. At the workshop, she discussed other courses, particularly beading workshops available through the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC). Taking inspiration from her Métis heritage and a few instructional videos and books, Kayla was on her way to developing the skills she needed to create a successful side-gig business named Continental Divide Beading Co. Themes From Nature Since September 2021, Kayla has created and sold jewelry online through her Facebook page and in-person at events like the recent Christmas Extravaganza held at Lac La Biche’s Bold Centre. To date, designs take their theme from nature, reflected through the names of her collections, including Snowy Owl and Great Plains.Advertisements The Journey Continues Although the business is still in its infancy, Kayla hopes to expand her offerings to flat-stitch beadwork on items like […]

While raising her family, she learned from experience, watching online instructional videos, and taking short courses like “food safety.” Advertisements Today, Bridget’s home-based business takes in orders for anywhere between 5 and 25 cakes each month, along with an accompanying request for a theme that ranges from armoured tanks to tree stumps. Cows Anyone? “For some peculiar reason, cakes in the shape of a cow are trendy right now,” says Vezeau. Briget’s cakes are typically three tiers. Each layer is between 5 and 7 inches of customized delight, whether traditional chocolate flavour, carrot cake or something more decadent like tiramisu or cheesecake with fruit filling – the sky’s the limit. Bridget’s business is also branching out to offer a variety of […]

The Straight & Arrow Boutique Is Not Your Typical Shopping Experience Life happens. After 15 years of running a home photography business, Allison Dupre knew it was time for a change, but it wasn’t a quick process. She often thought about operating a clothing boutique, and along with her husband Josh, they put a 2-year plan into place to make it happen. Then came the 2020 pandemic shutdown; two years became six months. With some intense research and quick trips to the United States to acquire merchandise, her former photography studio became the Straight & Arrow Boutique. The Best of Both Worlds This home-based business differs from most because Allison’s boutique operates on her acreage in a facility separate from her house. It’s the best of both worlds, with a bit of separation but right at home at the same time.Advertisements Selling the Experience While her own experience operating a business, especially a women’s clothing boutique, is different from most, the extraordinary experience that treats Straight & Arrow customers just as unique. “It’s all about the experience,” says Dupre. “It’s a quiet, rural setting, away from the typical store-fronts and the busier streets and sidewalks that go with them.” Building […]
Dylan’s Things to Do… When you think about libraries, the first thought for many is borrowing books. With E-books and other forms of entertainment competing for our attention, libraries have had to become more than a place to borrow books. While our Lac La Biche County Libraries (LLBCL) continues to offer book borrowing services, it also continues to innovate, transform, and evolve to serve our residents’ growing and changing needs.Advertisements Guitars Anyone? One such innovation is expanding the borrowing service to items beyond just books. At our Stuart MacPherson Public Library, you can borrow various musical instruments, including guitars, violins, xylophones, bongos, ukuleles, keyboards, drum sets and production kits, to name a few. Each of these items comes with a learning book, so you can learn a new skill without having to invest hundreds of dollars. Maybe You’ve Caught the Baking Bug If music isn’t your thing, our library also has five telescopes available to borrow. Whether you want to spend a casual evening star gazing or are an advanced astronomer, the Stuart MacPherson Public Library has a telescope for you. Maybe your interests are a bit more down-to-earth? If so, our library has you covered. Another item you can […]
According to Gene… You may or may not have noticed that The Pelican newsletter and the Mainstreet Lac La Biche website and mobile apps are not clearly marked with who “owns them.” There is an excellent reason for that, but to adequately explain, I should begin by telling you a little more about your local “Community Futures.”Advertisements CF Has Deep Roots In Community Some of you may not know that our roots go back to about 1974. While we have had several names, we were always a local not-for-profit focused on supporting local businesses and the community. In 1986, the federal government started the Community Futures initiative representing every inch of rural Canada with 267 offices. Our local office signed a contract to deliver services, and we’ve never looked back. Why? Because it’s been a perfect fit! For over 35 years now, the program has become one of the most successful federal initiatives, and we are very proud of that. Volunteers Are the Key A key to our success is that your local Community Futures is governed by local volunteers working for the success of our region. Though our funding leaves us on a tight budget, we are thankful to […]
Four Season’s Clothing has been a Lac La Biche institution for 35 years, but if you’ve walked through their doors recently, you probably noticed that something is different. Just six short months ago, the business was purchased by Allison and Gary Gross, and with that, new energy was injected into the local shopping scene.Advertisements Both Gary and Allison have a financial service background which put them in an excellent position to consider all the right things when purchasing a business in a rural Alberta community. However, the couple wasn’t necessarily looking to get into clothing sales. As Gary points out, “we were looking for a business that would provide us with the flexibility that would suit our lifestyle.” Did we forget to mention that Gary is a professional rodeo and chuckwagon announcer as well? Gary and Allison Gross – Owners While being new to the clothing industry has been an exciting adventure all by itself, each day has brought on new challenges, from the impact of Covid-19 to, more recently, a host of supply chain issues caused by the flooding in BC. Another interesting twist is that many clothing suppliers are now asking retailers to order up to a year […]
While we might have been a bit late to the Black Friday party, Lac La Biche residents are not wasting anytime catching up to their neighbours to the south on the day after American Thanksgiving. Businesses And Shoppers Jump On The Bandwagon Each year, more Lac La Biche shoppers are jumping on the Black Friday bandwagon to buy big and small ticket items, and local businesses have responded with discounts and savings to make this shopping extravaganza a reality right here at home.Advertisements We’ve Made It Easy For You If you are wondering where to start or how to find the best deals local businesses have to offer, it’s as simple as going to mainstreetlaclabiche.com and clicking on “special offers” to find sales and savings from more than 20 local businesses at your fingertips. The aim of business is to make money. How? By providing things that people need or want. This equation has two sides: Sellers and buyers. When a transaction happens, dollars exchange and the economy runs. Simple enough. Stop The Drain Locally we need more of this happening within our region. Otherwise, what happens is leakage. The money goes from here to Edmonton or Seattle (Amazon), and the drain is bad for our local economy. What we need to do is circulate the money locally and, in fact, bring in cash from the outside.Advertisements Not-For-Profits Address The Issue A partnership of 5 not-for-profits got together and created a solution to address that very issue. The goal was to help all businesses get online, not just the ones already experienced with e-commerce. If you’ve ever tried to set up an online shopping site, you know this can be confusing, if not overwhelming. We wanted to demystify the process of selling online and help work-at-home or sideline businesses generate sales and become both profitable and competitive. Businesses already taking part in our program know the excellent value of our website. Setting Up An Online Shopping Network Some of the roadblocks to setting up […]
The Festival of Trees has always been one of my favourite events hosted in our county, and I always look forward to the unique and interesting trees put on display by local businesses. While The Festival Trees is a joyful and fun event, it also gives hope and love to those who need it most. This annual event provides for many of our non-profit children groups, school clubs and music programs. Because this event supports our community non-profits, The Festival of Trees does not charge for admission. Instead, they ask you to donate food items, a new toy, men’s and women’s personal-care items, used winter clothing, socks, undergarments etc. These items will be donated to Waskaysoo Community Food Bank, Santa’s Helpers, and Lakeland Out of the Elements Society.Advertisements The Festival of Trees takes place from November 25th to 28th in the Devon Room at the Bold Center. Part-time High School Job Leads to Business Figuring out what kind of business makes sense for you doesn’t have to be complicated. Miranda Bobocel has known what she wanted to do since she was in high school. Starting as a shampoo girl, Miranda has known that hairstyling and cosmetology were part of her future. Since July 2021, MIRBeauty.co has operated on the 2nd floor of the “Lucky 15 “building across from Home Hardware, offering a full complement of hair, nail, gel nail, body-sculpting, and teeth whitening services.Advertisements Word-Of-Mouth Key To Marketing The business has gone well since the opening. Miranda suggests that letting people know where you are located remains one of her biggest challenges, but with a strong word-of-mouth marketing campaign, her stable of clients is steadily growing. Keeping up with the trends in cosmetic fashion is also an ongoing challenge. Miranda keeps up on the latest styles and techniques through courses in the city and through various online options that have ramped up significantly since the onset of the pandemic. Nailing the Colour While almost all her clients get some type of colouring with their hairstyle, Miranda has noticed a trend in those wanting a more natural look, […]
A previous article on this website highlights the significant role commercial fishing played in our history. Rivers brought fur traders to this high point on the continental divide. Our lakes fed families and eventually employed hundreds, including spin-off industries. Lac La Biche’s whitefish caviar is rumoured to have been enjoyed by royalty. Sail boating, sport-fishing, boating, camping, and holiday cabins all followed. While it seems that a boat is a very apt metaphor for our region historically, a boat -one that is in rough water is an appropriate symbol for our current state of affairs. Let me explain. Tourism: Advertisements We live in a region that leaves most visitors envious, having some 150 lakes and 70% of the class A beaches in Alberta. Unfortunately, we have not developed the potential of these attractions to their fullest. We must capitalize on this better. Economy: We are all feeling the double effects of a downturn in the price of oil and Covid-19. World Activism: It sometimes feels like significant parts of our livelihood have become dirty words. How dare we make money from our natural resources? I’ll say no more. Politics: Threats to dissolve the Alberta oil and gas economy by our federal government. […]
Waste Reduction Weeks Offers Opportunities for Personal and Economic Growth Starting Monday, October 18, 2021, Waste Reduction Week will take place throughout Lac La Biche County. This week-long event highlights and promotes environmental awareness and sustainability in our community. Lac La Biche County is well known for its beautiful scenery and wildlife, enticing people to make this region their vacation destination. This means that preserving nature is not only about environmental sustainability; it is a critical business sustainability issue as well. As many residents know, the blue-green algae problem in our lake seems to worsen every year, primarily due to pollutants through human impact. The increase in harmful algae reduces our ability to enjoy one of our most spectacular natural resources. It also impacts the number of days tourists stay in our area, spend money and support our economy. Advertisements image courtesy of photo contestant Teresa C. During Waste Reduction Week, I encourage as many people as possible to become better environmental stewards. Take part in at least one of the events to learn how they can assist in preserving our local natural resources. One such event is the vermicomposting workshop. On Tuesday, October 19, join the Lakeland Industry and Community […]
You may have seen a food truck, The One Stop Bannock Shop, around town or at a social gathering or event in the region. Although this food truck is relatively new, the catering business itself started in the mid-1980s. Family Tradition Continues Current owner and operator Crystal Atkinson from the Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement speaks proudly of her mother, who ran the business for many years, and how her family is building on her hard work and teachings to carry on the tradition.Advertisements In its modern form, the One Stop Bannock Shop began about five years ago, setting up shop at Pow-Wows and events hosted by the Métis Nation. Today, Crystal provides catering to events with in-house kitchen facilities and those that don’t with the flexibility offered by the food truck. Indigenous Cuisine with a Modern Touch As the name of the business suggests, The One Stop Bannock Shop offers a unique and creative take on Indigenous and modern cuisine. Bannock burgers, fried bannock tacos, fried baloney on bannock bread and a variety of daily specials are just a few of the staples offered on the menu. Growing up in the Lac La Biche region, I often heard people say, “there’s nothing to do in LLB.” While the statement is still one I hear, I no longer agree with it. Since I started working at our local Community Futures office, some of my responsibilities include creating content for the MainStreet Lac La Biche website, and most of that content includes events, activities, and things to do in the Lac La Biche region. When we were deciding on the layout of the events page, it was questioned if we should even have a calendar layout as it would most likely look empty and barren. We were completely wrong.Advertisements The issue is not that there is nothing to do in LLB; the “things to do” in LLB were so plentiful, it was a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, the MainStreet site can organize our community events in one convenient location. The events are also searchable and filters allow you to quickly find something to do. Over many years, the idea that “there is nothing to do in LLB” has been engraved into our minds. This has motivated me to create a monthly article highlighting events that are upcoming, interesting, or important. Each […]
The story of Lac La Biche is familiar to some, but our rich history would prove worthy of a PBS mini-series for many young people and new faces to the community. In the coming months, the Pelican will offer a small glimpse from our past and hopefully encourage a few of our readers to find out more. It may not be news to anyone that the Lac La Biche region is often referred to as a hub for sportfishing, but you might be surprised to learn how critical commercial fishing was in developing our community. In the early 1900s, with two commercial fishing plants on the lake, hundreds of fishermen set forth each morning for their daily harvest. Advertisements Guests of the Lac La Biche Inn in 1916 display their catch. (Maccagno, Tom. “The Lac La Biche Inn: just the place for Jaded Edmontonians.” Alberta History, vol. 61, no. 1, winter 2013, pp. 22+. Gale Academic). By 1916, whitefish from Lac La Biche became a staple on the most refined menus in many larger cities across North America. By the 1950s, more than 2 million pounds of fish were harvested each year. The industry was instrumental in the growth and proliferation of […]

We talked about succession planning last month, but let’s use the word retirement this time. It’s something almost every one of us aspires to – having both the time and money to enjoy life. Unfortunately, if you are a business owner and your business can’t be sold, you may not realize that dream, at least not the way you wanted to. What’s the solution? I propose that the best solutions might be found in looking at some common problems experienced by small business. Problem One: The lack of employees willing to take on entry-level or lower-paying jobs. Advertisements Employees want more nowadays, even if it’s their very first job. They want work that is fulfilling, rewarding, and with good pay right from the get-go. That frustrates owners because most of them cannot offer more salary or benefits to junior employees when their bottom line doesn’t support it. Problem Two: The lack of skilled labour. What business owner wouldn’t want to hire an employee who is a skilled salesperson, efficient inventory taker, excellent problem solver adept at customer service? And what employer wouldn’t want an employee that could run the place so well that they would feel comfortable taking more time off? […]

It is often said that not enough young people stay in their home communities throughout rural Alberta to work and raise their families. While it is true that some young people move away to seek their fortune each year, a few businesses are doing their part to ensure local youth find a positive workplace experience, learning opportunities and a chance for career growth right here at home. In Lac La Biche, Britton’s Your Independent Grocer is an outstanding example of this type of company. It may surprise you to know that Britton’s employs a staff of up to 130 people, with over 60% of them considered youth – many of high school age. While many businesses lament that it is difficult to recruit young people to either full-time or part-time vacancies, Bill Britton, store owner, uses one of the oldest recruitment tricks in the books –word of mouth. “Youth are not as scared to try a new job if they can talk to their friends to find out what a typical day might look like,” says Britton. “Many young employees tell their friends about their job and that it’s a great place to work. In most cases, store positions are […]
You may have seen the colourful buses driving around Lac La Biche County and wondered who is using them and where they are going. You may be surprised to learn that users of the bus service, formally known as the Lac La Biche County Community Access System, include pretty much anyone who needs transportation within LLB County. Lisa Wesley is part of a team of drivers that helps keep the services running. She pointed out that there are two types of transportation services available for residents of Lac La Biche County.Advertisements COMMUNITY ACCESS PARATRANSIT The first type of transportation is the Community Access Paratransit Bus Service. This service provides door-to-door transportation within the County to persons with either permanent or temporary disabilities, and our seniors. Those who use the service must register with the County in advance and are billed monthly for the rides taken. Costs range from $4 for a one-way trip inside the hamlet to $16 for a return trip county-wide. COMMUNITY ACCESS BUS SERVICE The second type of transportation is offered between 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM Monday to Friday to anyone in need of a ride in Lac La Biche County, whether it is to a […]
I have first-hand knowledge of an Alberta community that is at risk of losing its post office. Can you imagine having to travel a long way just to get something as basic as your mail? In that same way, a well-rounded selection of businesses is critical to the success and indeed future of any community. More specifically, I’m afraid for our community. I’m worried that without some action we will dwindle and atrophy in the future. Our future could be bleak. Don’t get me wrong. I want to be an optimist, but I feel there is a very critical point in time looming. As much as we may complain about a lack of energy and development in our town, 10 years from now we may look back at our current situation and the health of our local businesses as the glory days. Not to make generalizations or point out any specific examples, it is my personal opinion and observation that we should be wary of a few community dynamics that are currently underway.Advertisements HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING With our economic downturn, we have many business owners that would have (or should have) retired long before now are just able to “hang […]

Portage College News Archive (https://www.portagecollege.ca/News/News-Archive) AUGUST 12, 2021 On June 28, 2021, fire ravaged a building in downtown Lac La Biche. Next door to the fire, Selena’s Hair Design was significantly damaged and temporarily shut down. Owner Selena Cadieux contacted Portage College the next day about operating the business out of the Salon at the College’s Lac La Biche campus. At the same time, she searched for new permanent accommodations.Advertisements Cadieux has previously apprenticed Portage Hairstyling graduates and knew that the program was out for the summer, which prompted her to contact the College. “I was hoping we could continue working together,” she said. The College readily agreed to the proposal. “Portage is here to support the community in times of need, and we gladly accepted Selena and her team into the Salon,” said Al Bertschi, Associate Dean. “We’re pleased to provide the space so they can remain together during this difficult time.”. Cadieux has found the College to be accommodating. Her transition has gone smoothly. “Things are going very, very well!” she said. “I want to give a special thank you out to Al Bertschi, who was very helpful in the process of getting myself and fellow stylist set […]
When Jim Tarrabain decided to forego mink ranching in 1974, he purchased a Gulf station in Lac La Biche. Today, on that same site, his three daughters, Tammy, Anni, and Soad, operate Tarrabain Motors- a Dodge, Jeep, Ram dealership, including an automotive service shop and parts centre, a Shell gas station and convenience store, and a carwash. For these women, it hasn’t always been easy in this male-dominated industry. Still, when we think about recent efforts to encourage more women to become involved in business, we need not look any further than Lac La Biche to find an outstanding example of women as successful entrepreneurs. Tammy and Jim Tarrabain in 2005 Success through respect and honesty Tammy Tarrabain says that the family owes much of their success to the people who work for them, especially those who have been with the company for over 20 years. She says, “We make every effort to treat both employees and customers with respect, honesty and the way you would want to be treated,” something that their parents instilled in each of the siblings. You may have seen a blue food truck near the spray park at McArthur Park. Maybe, you bought an ice cream cone from the nearby concession stand. While services like these are often taken for granted, they don’t just appear out of nowhere. Like most business ventures, there is a good deal of risk, effort, and ingenuity involved to get them off the ground, and much more than meets the eye of your typical customer. Christine and Andrew Edwards came to the Lac La Biche region from Vancouver Island through northern BC just a few short years ago. They fell in love with the area. With a food industry background, they were eager to take over the Plamondon Arena concession stand when the opportunity presented itself. With comments like “this is some of the best concession food I’ve ever had,” they became an instant hit, and catering to the hockey crowd soon led to the launch of the Top Shelf Grill At The Plamondon Arena, open seven days a week between 11 am and 2 pm and 5 pm and 7:30 pm. The Northeast Alberta Food Marketers Association in conjunction with Community Futures and funding from the Province of Alberta and the Government of Canada has created an online Food Marketplace so that all food producers and retailers have an opportunity to sell their products online with minimal investment. After a workplace injury required Clinton Lizee to reconsider his career, he and his wife Victoria purchased 160 acres of pristine nature near Wandering River to begin an RV park/campsite. Since purchasing the land in 2020, the Lizee’s have developed 22 sites for the RV enthusiasts, complete with water, electricity and a sewage dump station. Each site is rented on an annual basis for $3000 if the site has both electrical and water, and $2300 for just water. Advertisements Like many RV-associated businesses during the past year and the pandemic, Back to Nature has been busy. Currently, 18 of the 22 sites have been rented by RV campers mostly from the Fort McMurray area. Passion for the Outdoors Leads to Successful Business Idea Clinton is quick to point out that the Back to Nature RV Park has distinguished itself from others in the region with a dedication to customer service and security facilitated by the fact that he lives at the park. “I’ve worked outdoors my whole life, and being able to do what I do now is as much of a hobby and passion for me as it is a business”. Customer Service and a Moose By Any Other Name… […]

Last month you may recall that I wrote that our Community could benefit from getting on the “Worlds Largest” tourist map by building a Giant Pelican. I’m not actively campaigning we do this, but also not saying we shouldn’t either. As with anything like this, it will happen if there is interest, a champion and if it makes sense. Sometimes off-the-wall ideas can turn into genuine solutions. I love it when that happens. This idea may be just a fleeting daydream, but I think we all need an escape from reality these days! So, here goes the continuing saga of the Pelican: After my article was published, someone phoned me with the idea to turn Lac La Biche’s rusty water tower into the World’s Largest Pelican. I thought the idea was fantastic! Within half an hour a second person phoned me with the same idea! So, I asked someone better at graphics than I to toy around with the concept and see if it was even remotely possible. As you can see by the very quick mock-up, it just might work!Advertisements The thing would be GINORMOUS – awesomely so! My next thought was – “It’s going to take a lot […]

Noella Somerville moved to Alberta from Quebec more than 20 years ago. Her life has changed quite a bit since then. Most notably, her love of art and healing found a place to flourish, and along with that, so has her ability to share her passion with everyone she encounters. It started with a walking stick As an artist, Noella started out quite unassumingly. Her brother-in-law encouraged her to take a wood and soapstone carving course at Lee Valley Tools in Edmonton. She completed the program and in doing so, came away with one of her first creations – a walking stick, soon to become a symbol of her journey that she keeps on display in her Lac La Biche boutique.Advertisements In 2003, the next phase of Noella’s training led her to Red Deer College where she studied wood carving one week each summer for 3 years in a row. It is here where she met her late husband who played such a significant role in her artistic development. As a taxidermist and artist himself, he continually encouraged Noella to pursue her talents and passion for a variety of arts and crafts, including leatherwork. There was no looking back, and Noella […]

Technology permitting, it’s easy to connect, but hard to get the attention of people in this new Zoom world. There are simply too many options and we’re all likely suffering burnout. Nobody can pay attention to everything they want to, let alone should. So when there is something local that people should hear about it makes the job difficult. What am I talking about? Community initiatives are a great example. Everyone has priorities, but… I am currently working on no less than four major projects to support our local community, region, and province, but it’s hard to reach people right now, even when we create something that answers our needs. Given the current situation, I don’t blame anyone for having other priorities, but it did cause me to ask myself, “What can we do to get people’s attention?”Advertisements A common enemy always brings people together, but there are plenty of those around (COVID being one), and I don’t particularly want to write about that. I want to stay positive, so what else could we use as a focal point for our community? What about a “World’s Largest”? Vegreville has its Easter Egg, Glendon has its Giant Perogy. So why don’t […]

Ankita Verma has gone a long way to find the right fit. In Lac La Biche, she has found just that. After graduating from Rajiv Gandhi University in India with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2009, she worked as a physiotherapist for 3.5 years. In 2014, Ankita and her husband moved to Fort St. John, BC. With a good deal of determination, she worked with regulatory agencies to obtain her professional certifications to practice her profession in Canada. After a 3-year stint in Fort McMurray, her journey has led her to Lac La Biche, where she opened Lakeland Physiotherapy located at 100- 10107 102 Ave a few short weeks ago. Bringing Smiles to Lac La Biche Ankita has been very pleased with the steady growth in the number of clients and community support that Lakeland Physiotherapy has received in the short time it has been open. The Lakeland Physiotherapy website points out that “Ankita enjoys working with all age groups and is passionate about helping people to ease their pain, manage their injuries or chroming conditions, and get back to activities that they enjoy. She believes in a hands-on approach and uses a combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, therapeutic […]
We’ve heard a lot about the struggles of small businesses in northeast Alberta during the past year, so it’s pretty refreshing when we get a chance to celebrate an enterprise that has been doing quite well. Screenshot Computers and Supplies, a homegrown Lac La Biche small business, is doing just that. Talk is Cheap… and Effective Owners and operators Bonnie Collinge and Ryan Manca have worked hard to keep up with the growing demand for their products and services. They ran out of space at their old location and have moved to a more prominent and larger storefront at 10208 – 101 avenue. When asked about the secret to their success, they point to a focus on customer service and outstanding community support driven mainly through word-of-mouth marketing. Besides a growing inventory, space was also needed for additional staff. Collinge and Manca have hired an on-site technician to assist with the steady increase in business. Advertisements Screenshot has seen a lot of changes in their business in just a short time period. Besides the corporate clients who have traditionally been the backbone of their client base, there has been significant growth in walk-in traffic. Manca says that more folks walking in […]
If you’ve watched Pawn Stars on the History Channel, you might think you have a good idea about how a pawn shop operates, but then again, maybe you don’t. Always Changing Michael McArthur, owner of Pelican Pawn, Lac La Biche’s newest venture into the pawnshop business, may have a surprise for you. His shop, located at 10117-101 avenue just below his pool hall, offers more than you might expect. From brand new to used or, as Mike says, re-purposed items for sale, Pelican Pawn’s stock is unique and continually changing. Of course, you will find ordinary things that any pawn shop would offer for sale – musical instruments, tools, and stereo equipment, but in between all of that, you will find some outstanding pieces of art, antiques, and taxidermy pieces. Once in a while, you might find something special, like a rare guitar or even a Mercedes Benz, for sale.Advertisements McArthur says the idea to open a pawn shop was seeded by the need to fill rental space in his building, but there is more to it than that. He talks about growing up in Red Deer, where his family owns and operates a museum and how his mother inspired […]
Readers of The Pelican may have figured out that we feature local businesses and topics and highlight successes and solutions, so the return to Phase 1 COVID restrictions is a severe blow. Is there any lemonade here for business owners or customers? Can local businesses possibly weather this? This is my challenge for this month’s article. Change the Rules “You can accept the death sentence, or you can change the rules,” is what Graham Sherman from Tool Shed Brewery said in an interview during the recent Power Up Alberta Virtual Event. In short, after overcoming unimaginable obstacles when he was finally getting ahead, COVID effectively shut him down and threatened everything. After an understandable mental slump, he remembered that in every negative, there is a positive and asked himself: Whose Killing it? He canvassed the area around his Brewery, and just about 1km away, he found that Spud.ca was going out of their minds trying to keep up with orders. They needed everything he had: 8,000 ft2 of warehouse space, cooler space and lots of staff. Their problem and his problems saved both businesses. But what about rural and small businesses? We must focus on what we have going.Advertisements 1. […]
