LEE’S BURGER BARON BUILDS BRAND AND BUSINESS
Lee Thom, co-owner of Lee’s Burger Baron on Main Street doesn’t pretend to be a business expert, but he knows a thing or two about making connections with the community and customer appreciation. March 6th was the one-year anniversary of restaurant ownership for Lee and his wife and business partner Lisa. They’ve learned a lot in a short period of time. On the business side of things, Lee is quick to point out that when they bought the business he had little knowledge of things like setting up GST or CRA accounts, or with anything on the accounting side of things. He was also surprised about the number of suppliers he would need to work with in order to keep the restaurant in operation. Readers of The Pelican may have figured out that we feature local businesses and topics and highlight successes and solutions, so the return to Phase 1 COVID restrictions is a severe blow. Is there any lemonade here for business owners or customers? Can local businesses possibly weather this? This is my challenge for this month’s article. Change the Rules “You can accept the death sentence, or you can change the rules,” is what Graham Sherman from Tool Shed Brewery said in an interview during the recent Power Up Alberta Virtual Event. In short, after overcoming unimaginable obstacles when he was finally getting ahead, COVID effectively shut him down and threatened everything. Screenshot Bucks the Trend
We’ve heard a lot about the struggles of small businesses in northeast Alberta during the past year, so it’s pretty refreshing when we get a chance to celebrate an enterprise that has been doing quite well. Screenshot Computers and Supplies, a homegrown Lac La Biche small business, is doing just that. Talk is Cheap… and Effective Owners and operators Bonnie Collinge and Ryan Manca have worked hard to keep up with the growing demand for their products and services. They ran out of space at their old location and have moved to a more prominent and larger storefront at 10208 – 101 avenue. When asked about the secret to their success, they point to a focus on customer service and outstanding community support driven mainly through word-of-mouth marketing. Ankita Verma has gone a long way to find the right fit. In Lac La Biche, she has found just that. After graduating from Rajiv Gandhi University in India with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2009, she worked as a physiotherapist for 3.5 years. In 2014, Ankita and her husband moved to Fort St. John, BC. With a good deal of determination, she worked with regulatory agencies to obtain her professional certifications to practice her profession in Canada. Technology permitting, it’s easy to connect, but hard to get the attention of people in this new Zoom world. There are simply too many options and we’re all likely suffering burnout. Healing à la Source – the Journey Continues
Noella Somerville moved to Alberta from Quebec more than 20 years ago. Her life has changed quite a bit since then. Most notably, her love of art and healing found a place to flourish, and along with that, so has her ability to share her passion with everyone she encounters. It started with a walking stick As an artist, Noella started out quite unassumingly. Her brother-in-law encouraged her to take a wood and soapstone carving course at Lee Valley Tools in Edmonton. According to Gene… Let’s Make Lemonade From A Rusty Water Tower
Last month you may recall that I wrote that our Community could benefit from getting on the “Worlds Largest” tourist map by building a Giant Pelican. I’m not actively campaigning we do this, but also not saying we shouldn’t either. As with anything like this, it will happen if there is interest, a champion and if it makes sense. Sometimes off-the-wall ideas can turn into genuine solutions. I love it when that happens. This idea may be just a fleeting daydream, but I think we all need an escape from reality these days! So, here goes the continuing saga of the Pelican: After my article was published, someone phoned me with the idea to turn Lac La Biche’s rusty water tower into the World’s Largest Pelican. I thought the idea was fantastic! Within half an hour a second person phoned me with the same idea! Back To Nature RV Park
After a workplace injury required Clinton Lizee to reconsider his career, he and his wife Victoria purchased 160 acres of pristine nature near Wandering River to begin an RV park/campsite. Since purchasing the land in 2020, the Lizee’s have developed 22 sites for the RV enthusiasts, complete with water, electricity and a sewage dump station. Each site is rented on an annual basis for $3000 if the site has both electrical and water, and $2300 for just water. Top Shelf Grill – hard work grows opportunity
You may have seen a blue food truck near the spray park at McArthur Park. Maybe, you bought an ice cream cone from the nearby concession stand. Tarrabain Motors – a focus on service and community
When Jim Tarrabain decided to forego mink ranching in 1974, he purchased a Gulf station in Lac La Biche. Today, on that same site, his three daughters, Tammy, Anni, and Soad, operate Tarrabain Motors- a Dodge, Jeep, Ram dealership, including an automotive service shop and parts centre, a Shell gas station and convenience store, and a carwash. For these women, it hasn’t always been easy in this male-dominated industry. Still, when we think about recent efforts to encourage more women to become involved in business, we need not look any further than Lac La Biche to find an outstanding example of women as successful entrepreneurs. College Steps Up to Help Lac La Biche Salon Affected by Fire
Portage College News Archive (https://www.portagecollege.ca/News/News-Archive) AUGUST 12, 2021 On June 28, 2021, fire ravaged a building in downtown Lac La Biche. Next door to the fire, Selena’s Hair Design was significantly damaged and temporarily shut down. Owner Selena Cadieux contacted Portage College the next day about operating the business out of the Salon at the College’s Lac La Biche campus. At the same time, she searched for new permanent accommodations.Advertisements Cadieux has previously apprenticed Portage Hairstyling graduates and knew that the program was out for the summer, which prompted her to contact the College. “I was hoping we could continue working together,” she said. I have first-hand knowledge of an Alberta community that is at risk of losing its post office. Can you imagine having to travel a long way just to get something as basic as your mail? TICKET TO RIDE – BUS SERVICE IN LLB JUST A PHONE CALL AWAY
You may have seen the colourful buses driving around Lac La Biche County and wondered who is using them and where they are going. You may be surprised to learn that users of the bus service, formally known as the Lac La Biche County Community Access System, include pretty much anyone who needs transportation within LLB County. Lisa Wesley is part of a team of drivers that helps keep the services running. She pointed out that there are two types of transportation services available for residents of Lac La Biche County.Advertisements COMMUNITY ACCESS PARATRANSIT The first type of transportation is the Community Access Paratransit Bus Service. This service provides door-to-door transportation within the County to persons with either permanent or temporary disabilities, and our seniors. Those who use the service must register with the County in advance and are billed monthly for the rides taken. When John Kokotilo speaks about being the Regional Fire Chief for Lac La Biche County, it is very apparent that he takes pride in his team and their work. However, it may surprise you that there is much more to his job than first comes to mind. John Kokotilo, Manager Protective Services SIX COUNTY FIRE STATIONS There are five districts and six fire stations around the County, including 2 in Lac La Biche and others located in Plamondon, Hylo, Rich Lake, and Owl River. As Manager of Protective Services and Regional Fire Chief, Kokotilo oversees the Fire Services Division, the Fire Smart Program, the Disaster Services Division, the Safety Codes division, Emergency Management, and up to 75 paid, on-call firefighters. The story of Lac La Biche is familiar to some, but our rich history would prove worthy of a PBS mini-series for many young people and new faces to the community. In the coming months, the Pelican will offer a small glimpse from our past and hopefully encourage a few of our readers to find out more. It may not be news to anyone that the Lac La Biche region is often referred to as a hub for sportfishing, but you might be surprised to learn how critical commercial fishing was in developing our community. In the early 1900s, with two commercial fishing plants on the lake, hundreds of fishermen set forth each morning for their daily harvest. Growing up in the Lac La Biche region, I often heard people say, “there’s nothing to do in LLB.” While the statement is still one I hear, I no longer agree with it. Since I started working at our local Community Futures office, some of my responsibilities include creating content for the MainStreet Lac La Biche website, and most of that content includes events, activities, and things to do in the Lac La Biche region. When we were deciding on the layout of the events page, it was questioned if we should even have a calendar layout as it would most likely look empty and barren. You may have seen a food truck, The One Stop Bannock Shop, around town or at a social gathering or event in the region. Although this food truck is relatively new, the catering business itself started in the mid-1980s. This week-long event highlights and promotes environmental awareness and sustainability in our community. Lac La Biche County is well known for its beautiful scenery and wildlife, enticing people to make this region their vacation destination. A previous article on this website highlights the significant role commercial fishing played in our history. Rivers brought fur traders to this high point on the continental divide. Our lakes fed families and eventually employed hundreds, including spin-off industries. Lac La Biche’s whitefish caviar is rumoured to have been enjoyed by royalty. Sail boating, sport-fishing, boating, camping, and holiday cabins all followed. While it seems that a boat is a very apt metaphor for our region historically, a boat -one that is in rough water is an appropriate symbol for our current state of affairs. Let me explain. The Festival of Trees has always been one of my favourite events hosted in our county, and I always look forward to the unique and interesting trees put on display by local businesses. While The Festival Trees is a joyful and fun event, it also gives hope and love to those who need it most. This annual event provides for many of our non-profit children groups, school clubs and music programs. Because this event supports our community non-profits, The Festival of Trees does not charge for admission. Conversations Lead to Successful Side-Gig Starting a new business is not always the result of a great deal of planning. Sometimes, everything just seems to fall into place. For Kayla Tkachuk, this was indeed the case. While on maternity leave from her job, she attended a brunch with a few friends. The conversation led to an invitation to participate in a Ribbon Skirt workshop at the Native Friendship Centre. At the workshop, she discussed other courses, particularly beading workshops available through the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC). Electric Vehicles Make Slow Headway in Rural Alberta
While electric vehicles or EVs are gaining some traction in larger cities (pun intended), the uptake in rural areas has been limited at best. Besides underlying philosophical and political leanings towards oil and gas-driven engines, many of us who live in northern Alberta have practical issues to consider as well, including cold-weather reliability and distances travelled, not to mention the availability of charging stations. Surveys have shown that less than 10% of Canadians considering purchasing a new vehicle are considering an electric vehicle. Among rural drivers, this percentage is certain to be dramatically smaller. Another survey by Deloitte (Globe and Mail, Jan 25, 2022) indicated that most Canadians would feel more comfortable with EV’s that had a minimal driving range of 600 kilometres, compared to the standard 300 to 500 kilometres that most affordable EVs offer right now. Volunteers Are Key to Economic Growth
Have you ever considered the impact volunteers make in our community? Think about events like the Festival of Trees or Pow Wow Days. Think about those giving their time to those in need, helping seniors, assisting at hospitals, participating on various boards, or coaching our kids. The list is endless. Without volunteers, Lac La Biche would not be an attractive place for visitors, new businesses, or those looking for a community to raise their families. And if we were required to pay for services that volunteers provide for free, our taxes would simply skyrocket. RETIREMENT OPENS DOOR TO NEW BUSINESS
When Shawn Twigge retired from a career in the oil and gas sector, he knew in his heart that he still needed something to do. He also knew that to enjoy this next stage of his life, whatever he did, he must be passionate about it. Shawn Twigge, owner of Twig’s Appliance Repair Taking The Time To Do It Right As a person who always liked to work on small engines, quads, or whatever, he was quick to lean on these skills when thinking about starting a business. Often called upon to repair appliances for family or friends, it didn’t take a lot of market research to know that this type of service was needed in the Lac La Biche region. PLAMONDON GROUP MAKES REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES A PRIORITY FOR YOUTH
While local business was significantly affected by the covid-19 pandemic, it also made a huge impact on our kids and their education. With children forced to stay inside, play video games, and watch too much television, a group of parents, Home Grown Learners from the Plamondon area, decided to take matters into their own hands to get youth more engaged in their education, and ultimately their career choice. This was the inspiration for Adventure Shop. Adventure Shop Opens Door To Possibilities Adventure Shop is organized by parent volunteers and provides field trips for more than 100 kids from five to twelve years of age to various places of work in the Lac La Biche area. LLB Celebrates National Volunteer Week April 24-30.
From April 24 to April 30, Lac La Biche County and Family and Community Support Services will celebrate National Volunteer Week across the county. This year’s theme is “volunteering is empathy in action,” a theme that confirms that volunteering is about building strong connections between individuals and communities. On Thursday, April 28, 2022, LLB will host a Volunteer Appreciation Evening from 6 pm to 8 pm. Road To Hope – Making Miles And A Huge Difference For Those Who Need It the Most
If you haven’t heard about the Road to Hope Community Support Foundation, it’s time you did. Established in 2008, Road to Hope is a non-profit that provides no-charge transportation to Edmonton for those in the Lac La Biche or Athabasca region who require cancer medical treatment. Jessica Wallace, the foundation coordinator, says that they have a very active group of volunteer drivers with a few on the waiting list. Since the lifting of covid-19 restrictions, the organization has averaged about seven trips to the city each month, with numbers expected to increase as things get back to normal, with 20 clients typically using the service regularly.Advertisements ALPAC established the Road to Hope, and they continue to support the project as a signature charity. Another key supporter is the Kinsmen Club of Athabasca, which has purchased a van dedicated to the project. Lisa Roper’s journey to becoming an outdoors enthusiast isn’t unique. She was inspired by her father, who taught her how to enjoy and benefit from the Lac La Biche region’s spectacular natural environment. What is unique about Lisa Roper is the uncanny passion that pushes her to share her skills with anyone who takes an interest. A Giant Natural Playground Lisa was born in Lac La Biche, and at an early age, she was fortunate enough to experience the boreal forest and countless lakes in the area. “It was a giant playground,” says Roper, reflecting on her youth. Digital Service Squad To The Rescue
For many small business owners in rural Alberta, the idea of hosting a website or creating a social media presence can be a bit intimidating. Because of this, a good percentage of these businesses choose to do without a digital media presence, putting themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to connecting with customers locally and beyond. Recently, a new government program was created to reduce the digital divide between businesses that are online and those that are not. Plamondon Entrepreneur Still Going Strong
Tracy Lord has packed several careers into a relatively short timeframe. Born and raised in Plamondon, as a 21-year-old, she opened the Rendez-Vous Bakery in her home community, employing 14 people by the time it was sold. In 1996, Tracy moved on from the hospitality industry to start a new career with Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries, spending more than 15 years in the finance and corporate affairs departments. While she enjoyed her time with ALPAC, she was anxious to spend more time with her young family. With that in mind, and with a precedent set by her parents, she invested in local properties to rent or fix up and sell as a new source of income. Lemonade Day in LLB County Is So Much More Than It Seems
June 18, 2022, will be a busy day for Lac La Biche County with Lemonade Day. This event is a free and fun youth entrepreneurship program that teaches youth, Pre-K to high school, how to start, own and operate their own business. All participants will set up their lemonade stands in their towns at the location of their choice and try their hand at running their own business. The youth that participates in Lemonade Day keep all the profit their stand makes, but the program encourages them to save some, spend some and share some by donating to a charity of their choice. Long-time LLB Business Refreshed By New Owners
There are new business owners in town. Jamie and Ryan Beilstein purchased Lac La Biche Stationers this past April. And while they didn’t have plans to own a business when they began their journey to Lac La Biche over six years ago, sometimes a great opportunity determines how things turn out. Jamie and Ryan Beilstein & family, owners of Lac La Biche Stationers Opportunity Strikes Ryan, originally from Texas, was awaiting his Canadian citizenship before looking for employment. When he could apply for work, he accepted a job at Lac La Biche Stationers as a computer technician. Jamie, who comes from Innisfail, found work as an educational assistant. They were pretty sure that they would only be in the area for two years, but like many first-timers in the region, they soon fell in love with it. By now, most folks in the area have seen a new sign on Main Street that boldly reads Lac La Biche Pharmacy. With healthcare services at a premium in rural areas, this type of service is a welcome sight. Owner-pharmacist Mayur Patel, along with his business partner and wife Mishti Hirani, opened the business just a couple of short weeks ago on July 30th. A Focus On Healthcare The store focuses on health care products only, rather than the department store vibe that is common in many drugstore chain operations. Marczak’s Ace Hardware – Making Customer Service A Family Tradition
Family has always been key to the success of Marczak’s hardware store in Lac La Biche. When Joe and Amelia Leibel purchased Lac La Biche’s Mcleods Hardware franchise in 1960, little did they know that they would set the framework for a family business that would still be in place for more than 60 years. In 1972, Leibel’s daughter and son-in-law, Bruno and Helen Marczak, took over the business, and an eight-year-old Tony and his three sisters started working at the store doing odd jobs wherever and whenever they could. Rush Hour? The only rush hour in Lac La Biche is when the school day begins and ends. You see young people. Maybe there are even a few in your house. Gasp! How could we forget about them? There Is A Chicken and Egg Situation With Our Youth There ARE many youth-run businesses silently doing well in our area- actual brick-and-mortar businesses. A silent economy, if you will. There are also many successful youth earning good wages, employ others, and add to our economy. Connecting With Past Leads To Business Opportunity
Chelsey Supernault didn’t have the idea of starting a business when she watched a TikTok video demonstrating a macrame project. It was more about stirring up some beloved memories of her youth and spending time with her mother, who enjoyed the craft many years ago. The experience inspired her to pick up the hobby again; and before she knew it, she had completed her first project. In November 2021, with encouragement and technical expertise from her daughters, Chelsey was reluctantly convinced to take photos of her work, post them on Facebook and Instagram, and Rustic Sparkle Designs was born.
